Bulgaria: The Small European Country That Will Take Your Breath Away

Travel is finally making a comeback. Actually… it’s knocking down walls. After many of us felt uncomfortable with trans-continental travel over the last two years, 2023 could be the time when we finally hop on a plane to Europe again. But what countries should you visit? While most people will opt for tourist hotspots such as Spain, Italy, or France, I would strongly suggest to also find some time to visit Bulgaria.

Because travelers from all over the world are free to explore new countries and cities again, you should expect popular destinations to be overcrowded. So why not explore some hidden gems

If you love the outdoors, good wine, tasty food, and welcoming people, then Bulgaria will be a great place for you. Just like all other Balkan countries, the prices are mostly affordable and finding people who can speak English (at least to some degree) shouldn’t be too hard.

If you’re still not convinced that Bulgaria should be your next travel destination, here are a few things that might change your mind.

Stunning hiking locations

Are you a fan of hiking? Or do you just like to visit the mountains? Then you will be thrilled to hear that Bulgaria has some of the most breathtaking mountains in Europe. There are thirty-seven distinct mountains in Bulgaria, and even the highest peak of the Balkans is located there, called Musala. Some of Europe’s best hiking trails are found in Bulgaria, such as the Seven Rila Lakes or Boyana Waterfalls.

Beautiful winters

Being so rich in mountains, you can only imagine how beautiful the winter months are in Bulgaria. You have many different ski resorts available, that are considerably cheaper than most other ones in Europe. But even if winter sports aren’t exactly your cup of tea, you can still enjoy Bulgaria’s charming Christmas markets.

Bulgaria is full of culture and history

If you are a history nerd, then Bulgaria should be on top of your list. When it comes to the number of significant cultural and historical monuments, Bulgaria ranks third in Europe. It is a location with many significant historical sites, dating from the beginning of European civilization to the present.

Some of the places that every history lover should visit are the old city of Nessebar, Rila Monastery, the Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, and the Belogradchik Fortress.

As you can see, there are plenty of fortresses in this country. You will be able to see some incredible places and snap a few amazing photos in the meantime. There are also many museums worth visiting, such as the National Museum of Military History and the Varna Archaeological Museum.

Wine, food & people

If you just like to have a good time while traveling, then Bulgaria won’t let you down either. As I have already mentioned, locals are undoubtedly friendly, welcoming, and warm. The service is great, and most restaurants are affordable.

Their food and wine options are out of this world! Most Balkan countries are known for their delicious food, but it seems as if Bulgaria takes it up a notch. They always use fresh and delicious ingredients, and you will be able to find vegetarian and vegan options.

Now, let’s talk wine. No trip to Bulgaria would be complete without tasting some of the country’s renowned wines. But even if you’re not a huge wine lover, there are still some great drink options available. Such as Rakia or Pelin. But be warned, because these drinks are super strong.
