How To Do Bangkok On Different Budgets

Bangkok has long been renowned for being a cheap destination. But in recent years, the cost has risen quite a bit and many return travellers are surprised that their spending money doesn’t stretch quite as far. That said, Bangkok is still relatively inexpensive compared to many other cities around the world. How much you spend really depends on what quality accommodation, transport and dining you’re willing to put up with. Here is a guide on how to do Bangkok on a small budget, a medium budget and a larger budget.

On a shoestring

If you haven’t got a lot of money to spend, Bangkok’s hostels are your best option. The average cost of a hostel per night is currently $32 – but it’s possible to find hostels charging $5 or less per night depending on what time of year/day you stay.

Street food is a cheap option when it comes to eating. You can buy pad thai for 50 to 100 baht from some stalls (which is less than $3). Bangkok’s street food is incredibly varied and high quality, and is popular among travellers on all budgets.

A lot of tourists assume tuk-tuks are the cheapest way to get around Bangkok, but actually taxis can often be cheaper. Just be wary of taxi scams in some areas. Traveling by bus is also very cheap and is how the locals primarily travel.

On an average budget

Got slightly more to spend? Most mid-range travellers spend around $95 per day in this city. The average 4 star hotel in Bangkok costs roughly $70 per night. 3 star and 2 star hotels are much cheaper and can match the cost of some hostels, while providing you with your own air conditioned room.

On a mid-range budget, you may be able to try some local restaurants. Be wary that restaurants in tourist areas like Sukhumvit can be a little more pricey – look for restaurants in less touristy areas where the locals eat. Food courts are also generally quite affordable.

It’s worth exploring a range of different transport options from taxis to trains. The Skytrain is worth trying. Riverboat buses can also be a scenic transport option (consider taking a boat when exploring the floating markets to see them up close).

In luxury style

If you’ve got a larger budget (or indeed no budget), you can explore all kinds of other accommodation options. A 5 star hotel in Bangkok could ensure a truly relaxing stay – such hotels come with swimming pools, gyms and high-quality restaurants.

Want to dine in style in Bangkok? The city has a number of rooftop and high-rise restaurants that serve authentic Thai and Western food with stunning views of the city while you eat. Make sure to also try some of the city’s luxurious cocktail bars and clubs.

As for getting around, Bangkok has several luxury taxi services that you can book ahead. These offer more comfort than your average taxi. You can also privately hire boats to take you down the Chao Phraya river.

Conclusion

Bangkok is suitable for those on all budgets. Work out how much you can reasonably spend and plan ahead for the best trip experience.
