I Tried WooEye Colored Contact Lenses So You Will, Too!
Here’s something you might not know about me: I spend a lot of time thinking about eyes. Not in a creepy way, in an anthropological way. Eyes carry enormous cultural weight across virtually every mythology and folklore tradition I’ve studied. The evil eye. The all-seeing eye. The distinctive silver eyes of certain mythological figures, the eerie white eyes of the possessed. Targaryens (from the Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Universe have purple eyes in the books). Eyes are, consistently and cross-culturally, considered the window to something deeper than the self. So when I stumbled across WooEye and their absolutely wild array of colored contact lenses, I didn’t just see a fun beauty product. I saw a portal. A way to briefly inhabit something other than myself.
Michael thought I was over-complicating what is, essentially, buying colored contacts. He’s not wrong. But here we are. Regardless, I got to live our my Targaryen fantasies by sporting purple eyes for a short while.

What Is WooEye?
WooEye is a British brand offering a huge range of colored contact lenses — both prescription and non-prescription — that are FDA, CE, and ISO 13485 certified. They’re annual lenses (good for 12 months after opening), made from HEMA material with 40% water content, and they use what they call a “sandwich painting” technique: the color pigment is sandwiched between layers of the lens material, so it never makes direct contact with your cornea. As someone who had exactly zero prior experience with colored contacts and approximately one million questions about eye safety, that detail mattered to me.
They also block UV rays and blue light, which feels like a bonus I didn’t know I needed.
Pricing hovers around $27–$29 USD per pair on sale, which for a year’s worth of colored lenses is genuinely impressive. Free shipping is available to most countries, and they offer a 40-day trial warranty — if you open a pair and don’t like them, they’ll send you a different style for just a $9 shipping fee. That’s a nice safety net for the commitment-averse among us.
The Three I Tried
Thermo Aura Blue
This was my “easing in” choice, and I loved it immediately. The Thermo Aura Blue has a dreamy, slightly otherworldly quality — the kind of blue that looks intentional without screaming “I am wearing colored contacts.” It’s the lens for people who want to look like they were simply born with unusually striking eyes. I wore these on a casual filming day and multiple people asked if I’d done something different without being able to place exactly what. Mission accomplished.
Heaven Green
I am a sucker for green eyes. Always have been. The Heaven Green lenses have a rich, layered color that photographs beautifully — which, when you document your life for a living, is not a small thing. They struck a great balance between natural and noticeable, landing somewhere in the territory of “suspiciously gorgeous” rather than “obviously a costume.” These are my pick for anyone who wants a color shift that still reads as plausible.
Halo Purple
And then there was the Halo Purple. I need you to understand that the moment I put these in and looked in the mirror, I immediately became a Targaryen. For those unfamiliar with George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire — the book series that inspired Game of Thrones — the Targaryen family is historically depicted with distinctive purple eyes, a mark of their Valyrian heritage. The Halo Purple lenses are that exact shade: deep, vivid, and just surreal enough to feel genuinely magical without crossing into Halloween territory. These are my personal favorite of the three. I wore them to document a site for the show and the footage looks absolutely unhinged in the best possible way.

The Verdict
WooEye is a legitimately fun product with solid safety credentials, a wide enough range that you could spend an embarrassing amount of time browsing, and a price point that makes experimentation feel low-stakes. Whether you’re a traveler looking to add some visual drama to your content, a cosplayer, a curious person who has always wondered what you’d look like with green eyes, or someone who, like me, simply feels the spiritual call of the Targaryen bloodline, there’s something here for you.
I’ll be bringing the Halo Purple on my next adventure. The spirits I encounter will simply have to deal with it.
