The researchers who found this city didn’t name it after themselves, or a nearby landmark, or anything ceremonial at all. They named it after the one thing that had kept it hidden for over a thousand years: there simply wasn’t a path there. In Yucatec Maya, that’s Minanbé. It’s about as literal a name as archaeology gets.
A City Named for the Journey to Reach It
On June 22, 2026, Mexico‘s National Institute of Anthropology and History announced the discovery of Minanbé, an intact, apparently unlooted Maya city deep inside the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, at the base of the Yucatán Peninsula. The reserve itself is enormous, Latin America’s second-largest remaining forest after the Amazon. UNESCO has jointly listed it as a World Heritage site alongside the ancient Maya city of Calakmul.
Ivan Šprajc, an archaeologist with the Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, led the team behind the find, working with authorization from Mexican authorities. This discovery capped roughly three decades of Šprajc’s work surveying the largely unexplored Central Maya Lowlands. His career has already turned up more than 80 Maya sites, including a previous major find called Ocomtún, uncovered in 2023 in that same reserve. Šprajc has described the work over the years as genuinely grueling, the kind of fieldwork that makes him swear off doing another season, right up until the moment a new site actually turns up and makes all of it worth it again.
No Logging Roads Meant No Looters
This particular field season, the team went back to survey territory west of Chactún, a major site the same research group had first documented 13 years earlier. Airborne laser scanning technology helped identify likely structures hidden beneath the jungle canopy before anyone set foot on the ground. Getting there physically was another matter entirely. Researchers had to cut roughly three miles of new route through dense vegetation. From there, they continued by all-terrain vehicle, and then finished the journey on foot, covering the final stretch the way explorers have covered it for over a century: one step at a time, machete in hand.
That difficulty turned out to be exactly what preserved the site. Looters and loggers often find and strip other jungle ruins using old logging roads, sometimes decades before archaeologists ever get the chance to arrive first. No such paths led anywhere near Minanbé. Šprajc said it’s the first fully intact, seemingly unlooted city his team has found in three years of searching. The same isolation that made the discovery brutally difficult is precisely why there was still something worth discovering when they finally got there.
What Was Actually Waiting in the Jungle
Minanbé covers roughly 37 acres. It reached its peak during the Late Classic to Terminal Classic period, somewhere between 600 and 900 AD. Researchers found plazas surrounded by ceremonial and palace structures. Terraced land and hydraulic infrastructure, built to manage water across the site, sat alongside them, a sign the city’s residents had engineered their landscape carefully rather than simply building on top of it. A row of stone monuments lines a causeway connecting the city’s central district to its northeastern sector.
The site’s tallest structure is a pyramid temple standing about 43 feet high. Builders raised it in the distinctive Río Bec architectural style, known for finely cut masonry, elaborate molding, and a smooth, deliberately impressive façade rising toward a steep staircase. Archaeologists documented 14 separate stone monuments across the site altogether, including stelae and altars, several of them clustered right at the pyramid’s base.
A Decapitation Carved Into Stone, and a Date That Matters
One of those stelae carries a genuinely unsettling image: a carved figure decapitating another person with an axe or knife. It also carries a specific calendar date corresponding to 849 AD. According to Octavio Esparza Olguín, the project’s epigraphist, that date carries real weight. It suggests researchers erected at least some of these monuments shortly before Maya cities across the region were abandoned entirely, during the collapse of the 10th century. Deciphering the full hieroglyphic texts is still ongoing. But that single date already places Minanbé at a genuinely valuable moment, not at the height of Maya civilization, but right at its edge, in the years just before everything started coming apart.
A Civilization at Its Absolute Peak, Right Before It Wasn’t
During the Late Classic period, the broader Central Maya Lowlands supported an estimated 9 to 11 million people, a genuinely staggering population for the era and region. Researchers now hope Minanbé can help answer part of a much larger question: what actually happened to all of it. One current theory under investigation involves groups from the northern Yucatán Peninsula, particularly those centered around Chichén Itzá. Those groups may have moved into the political vacuum left behind as southern cities like Minanbé collapsed. If that theory holds up, it would mean outside pressure actively accelerated the region’s depopulation, rather than northern groups simply settling into an already-empty landscape afterward.
To help answer that, the team has already taken thousands of photographs at the site. Researchers are now using those images to build detailed 3D digital models of every stela and altar they documented, a process that lets scholars study and share the carvings without repeatedly disturbing the physical site itself. Given how much of Minanbé’s preservation depends on its sheer inaccessibility, minimizing future foot traffic matters almost as much as the initial documentation did.
The reserve that hides Minanbé has produced results like this before, and Šprajc’s team expects it will keep doing so. Calakmul alone covers more than 1.7 million acres of largely unbroken forest, and researchers still consider much of it effectively unmapped at the level of detail modern archaeology actually requires. Each new discovery narrows that gap slightly, while confirming just how much of the ancient Maya world likely still sits under the canopy, waiting on the right combination of laser data, funding, and a team willing to spend a week cutting a path that, by definition, was never supposed to exist.
