Strange Findings You Have to Visit Near Area 51

Area 51, a secret location wrapped up deeply in lure, myth, mystery, and gimmick- most definitely gimmick, too. I’ve never found myself having any burning desire to be around Area 51 and uncover its mysteries. After all, while I definitely believe that there could be life out there, I highly doubt it’s little green men looking to probe us. However, we can’t deny the secrecy our government has kept around Area 51, likely due to the many areal weapons or crafts the US government is likely testing there. But the secrecy does lead to intrigue for many, because even if you go on google maps, most of it is whited out, making us wonder what the government doesn’t want us to see. People who have gotten up close say there are even signs saying you could be shot if you move past the designated area.

So, despite my lack of burning desire, I was pushed to visit the area surrounding Area 51 for work, and we found some rather exciting gimmicks nearby. In fact, what I think is so interesting is that as you circle Area 51 and move down the Extraterrestrial Highway, you will find that, despite the fact that many locals lean into the little-green-man gimmick to bring in tourists, many do actually believe in aliens and have seen strange aircraft sightings, themselves.

If nothing else, it’s a fun idea to drive the full length of the Extraterrestrial Highway next to Area 51 just to say, “I’ve been there, and I’ve seen it.” Getting a boomerang with the sign, well, that’s just an extra cherry on top.

Without further ado, here are the fun and gimmicky things you can explore near Area 51.

Alien Fresh Jerky and the Potential “UFO Hotel”

I think it’s safe to say that many people love the fresh jerky you can get from Alien Fresh Jerky off the 15 highway between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. In Baker, you’ll find this massive jerky shop painted to look like a tank-like spaceship, and it’s a fun place to visit. And the jerky is delicious. While just a fun alien gimmick, it’s a cool stop that makes for a great photo opp. Plus, on the property, they are deep into the construction of the “UFO Hotel” which may or may not ever actually open. After all, the buildings are in place, the designs look gorgeous and fascinating, but the construction has been paused for years and the last Instagram post from the hotel was in 2015, so that’s not a good sign. Though employees claim that its release is still a possibility. We can only hope. And the snack bar found in between the jerky shop and the hotel featuring a menu with alien-shaped pretzels looks delicious, so I can only hope that will open up soon.

Area 51 Alien Center

If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for fun alien merchandise, coffee, snacks, and more, then you should visit the Area 51 Alien Center in Armagosa Valley near the official gate to Area 51. While it’s mostly just a fun Alien shop with an attached diner, if you’re on a road trip in the area, it’s a must-visit, as you can pick up some small groceries for your trip along with an array of alien merchandise. There’s even a brothel next door… so, I guess it has everything?

Alien Research Center

Another fun, gimmicky stop near the south-side entrance of the Extraterrestrial Highway is the Alien Research Center. With a giant alien, a domed metal façade, and a small, boxed office that looks like a crate decorated with the sign “ship to Area 51”, I feel like you can’t miss it. While it was closed when we drove through, you can easily speak with the people at the Alien Research Center to find out everything alien most days of the week.

The Black Mailbox

The Black Mailbox is, unsurprisingly, a black mailbox positioned in the middle of the road down the the Extraterrestrial Highway. Likely because of its location, which is not only in the Center of the Extraterrestrial Highway but also near Area 51, this mailbox became a meeting place for those looking to find out more about alien lifeforms and what lies beyond the gates of Area 51. It started with people leaving messages for aliens in the mailbox and blew up into a sensational location for the alien-enthused to meet. When you approach it, it’s just that- a black mailbox with stickers all over it by the roadside. When you look inside, you’ll find messages and what can only be described as “gifts” left for the owner of the mailbox… who some people may believe has access to the aliens. When we were there, there were messages, incense, and even empty bullet shells left in the mysterious box. Talk about weird. While it doesn’t provide any proof of alien life, it is pretty wild to see and experience.

While driving around the perimeter of Area 51 will not likely give you any earth-shattering answers to what lies beyond our world, it is a fun way to add a new spin on a traditional road trip. So, if you’re looking for a fun alien adventure, hop in your car or RV and check out the following locations around Area 51.
