It’s no secret that Costa Rica is an absolutely stunning place. This gorgeous country that’s situated in Central America is a haven of natural beauty. It’s filled with exotic wildlife, lushes rainforests, and breathtaking landscapes. But there is one place hidden in the northwestern part of this country that simply stands out – Rio Celeste. This real-life oasis will captivate you with its unforgettable beauty and breathtaking natural pools. So if you want to learn more about this truly unique place, the activities that you can do there, and if it’s worth putting on your bucket list, then keep on reading.

Getting to Rio Celeste

Let’s talk logistics first. So, how can you actually get to Rio Celeste? Well, there are multiple options. You can drive or take a bus from Liberia International Airport. The nearest town is Bijagua, about 2.5 hours away. From Bijagua, you can take a taxi or drive to the Tenorio Volcano National Park. The entrance fee is $12 per person, and the park is open every day from 8 am to 4 pm.

Hiking to the Natural Pools

The hike to the natural pools is a moderate trek of around 4.5 miles, which takes about 3-4 hours to complete. The trail takes you through the lush rainforest of Tenorio Volcano National Park, where you’ll encounter a dazzling array of flora and fauna. The trail is well-marked, so you won’t get lost, but make sure to wear good hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Also, make sure to bring a camera. Because you’ll absolutely want to snap a few photos.

The Blue Lagoon and Waterfall

After about 1.5 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at the first stop, the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is a small natural pool with incredibly clear blue water that even sparkles in the sunlight. The intensity of the color is almost unbelievable – it’s truly a sight that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by dense vegetation, making it an excellent spot for taking pictures and cooling off before continuing your hike.

The Rio Celeste River and its Natural Pools

After hiking for another half-hour, you’ll arrive at the highlight of the trail – the Rio Celeste River. The Rio Celeste River gets its name from its striking blue color, which is caused by a chemical reaction between two streams of water that merge at a certain point. Pretty cool, huh? This unique river is also home to several natural pools that are nothing short of spectacular.

The first natural pool you’ll come across is the Teñideros pool. This is where the two streams of water mix and create the mesmerizing blue color of the river. Trust me when I tell you that this is unlike anything that you have seen before. The second natural pool is the Olla pool. This, on the other hand, is a small pool that’s perfect for swimming and relaxing after your demanding journey.

From everything that we have said above, you can be certain that Costa Rica’s Rio Celeste and its natural pools are just one of those hidden gems that any travel and adventure enthusiast shouldn’t miss out on. Truth be told – the hike could be challenging. But the climb will be more than worth it once you arrive and see this hidden oasis. So pack your hiking boots, swimsuit, and sense of adventure, and get ready to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Rio Celeste.
