The Ice Hotel: Sweden’s World-Famous Igloo Lodging

Did the cold never bother you anyway? And you’re looking for a truly unique and unforgettable travel experience? Then look no further than the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. You’ve probably already heard about this world-famous igloo lodging. It’s a real-life winter wonderland that found itself on the bucket lists of numerous travel enthusiasts. But spending a night at this extraordinary place is much more than simply sleeping in an igloo.

Why it’s unforgettable

The Ice Hotel is located in Jukkasjärvi, which is located about 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The hotel is only open from December to April, as it’s made entirely of ice and snow. That means that each year you’ll have the chance to explore completely new scenery. The hotel eventually melts, and the water returns to its origin, the Torne River. It doesn’t get more environmentally friendly than that, right?

The Ice Hotel is not just a hotel – it’s an experience. As I’ve already explained, the hotel itself is made every year from scratch. A team of artists and designers from all over the world gather in Jukkasjärvi to create this one-of-a-kind ice hotel. There is even a chapel created each year, so you can even host a wedding there. In addition to that, there are differently themed rooms, bars, and restaurants.

A Winter Wonderland

The Ice Hotel is located in the heart of Swedish Lapland, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, frozen rivers, and forests. It’s the perfect destination for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in a winter wonderland. You can explore the surrounding wilderness on snowmobiles, dog sleds, or even snowshoes. The Northern Lights are also visible from Jukkasjärvi, making it an ideal location for stargazing.

As previously mentioned, there are differently themed rooms and suites in this unique hotel. They feature stunning ice sculptures, ice beds, and warm sleeping bags to keep you cozy throughout the night. If you’re looking for a bit more luxury, the hotel also offers warm rooms and suites, which are built adjacent to the ice hotel and feature private bathrooms and saunas.

Activities

There’s no shortage of things to do at the Ice Hotel. In addition to exploring the surrounding wilderness, the hotel offers a variety of activities for guests. You can try your hand at ice sculpting, take a guided tour of the ice hotel, or even attend a cocktail-making class at the hotel’s Ice Bar. The hotel also offers a variety of wellness activities, including yoga and meditation classes.

Dining and drinking

The Ice Hotel features two restaurants – the Ice Restaurant and the Old Homestead – both of which serve delicious Swedish cuisine. The Ice Restaurant is located inside the ice hotel and features a number of different ice bars and ice sculptures. Honestly — you’ll be stunned. The Old Homestead is a traditional log cabin and serves classic Swedish dishes, such as reindeer meatballs and arctic char.  If you’re craving a drink, then make sure to visit the hotel’s Ice Bar. And you won’t have to ask for ice in your drink, because the glass your drink is served in is made entirely of ice.
