The Mysterious Legend of Château de Brissac: France’s Tallest Castle

Are you a fan of visiting castles? And you’re also fascinated by potentially haunted locations and ghost stories? Then you should visit the Château de Brissac on your next trip to France. Located in the Loire Valley of France, Château de Brissac is one of the country’s most unique and mysterious castles. Standing at over 100 meters tall, it is also the tallest castle in this country. With a rich history and a dark and mysterious legend surrounding it, the place continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

History

Château de Brissac was built in the 11th century and has been home to several noble families over the year. However, the castle underwent extensive renovations in the 19th century, when it was transformed into the grand and elegant residence it is today.

It is known for its well-preserved Renaissance and Gothic architectural elements, including its beautiful towers and grand staircase. Visitors can also admire the castle’s impressive collection of furniture, tapestries, and works of art, which provide a glimpse into the lifestyle of the French nobility.

The Legend

The legend of Château de Brissac is both mysterious and intriguing. It is said that the castle is haunted by the ghost of a young woman, known as the Green Lady. According to the legend, the woman was the wife of a former owner of the castle. Sadly, she was murdered by him in a fit of jealousy.

The Green Lady is thought to be the spirit of Charlotte de Brézé, the illegitimate child of King Charles VII and his mistress Agnes Sorel. Charlotte got married in 1462 to a nobleman named Jacques de Brézé. The couple allegedly did not love one another and their marriage was mostly politically driven. When Jacques discovered his wife having an extramarital affair after returning from a hunting trip, he snapped and killed the unlucky couple. After the murder, Jacques reportedly left the Château because he could not tolerate the screams of his late wife’s and her lover’s ghosts.

Visitors to the castle have reported seeing the ghostly figure wandering the halls and gardens, dressed in a flowing green dress. Some have even reported hearing her laughter or the sound of her footsteps. The Green Lady is probably the most well-known ghost story in France. But as terrifying as it sounds, the Château still remains a popular tourist attraction.
