Aokigahara Forest

This is, without a doubt, the most unsettling location in Japan. Located at the base of Mt. Fuji, Aokigahara Forest is known as the “Sea of Trees” and is one of the most famous suicide spots in the world. It is said that the spirits of the dead linger in the forest, and visitors have reported feeling a heavy, oppressive atmosphere as they walk through the dense trees. 

In recent years, the Japanese government has attempted to discourage suicide in the forest by posting signs and offering support services to those in need. But not much has changed. While I love a good ghost story and spooky locations, I would still encourage you to think twice before visiting this spot. There is a realistic chance that you’ll come across the body of one of the unlucky people who decided to end their lives in Aokigahara Forest.

Tokyo Tower

The Tokyo Tower is, without a doubt, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Tokyo. But besides the stunning views that you can enjoy from this remarkable structure, there are also a few ghost stories that are tied to it. The most popular is the one of a woman who died during its construction. Visitors have reported feeling a strange presence and even seeing the ghost of the woman on top of the tower or in the elevator. There isn’t too much information about this mysterious woman available, however, she is only one of the ghosts said to haunt this mysterious landmark. You can visit the Tokyo Tower every day from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Admission is 1,200 yen (approx. $11 USD) for adults and 900 yen (approx. $8 USD) for children.

Akasaka Mansion

The Akasaka Mansion building is considered the most popular haunted house in Tokyo. It is a former residence that was built in the 1920s. Today it serves as a popular hotel and event place. But there are also numerous ghost stories that are tied to it! Legend has it that the mansion was the site of a gruesome murder-suicide. Visitors have reported hearing strange noises such as screams and cry in the halls of the building. But that’s not the only thing. Visitors have also witnessed paranormal activity like lights switching on and off, and white smoke coming from the air conditioning. One woman even claimed that an unknown presence dragged her into a room, making this easily one of Tokyo’s most haunted places.
