To Dream is to Live

Dreams drive us, scare us, and finally, become us

Whether or not you know it, you have a dream. Some of us dream so vividly in the night it carries with us throughout the day, motivating us to achieve what we think will bring our ultimate happiness or guiding us away from the things we think will destroy us. Some of us slip away by day to dream a little more. The distractions of life not vivid enough to hold our colorful minds, but the world always pulls us back, time after time.

Whatever your dream is, silently it shapes you. Like a ship with a set destination, everything in you path toward it you will seek to clear. Whether or not you arrive at your destination makes no matter. It’s the ripples you produce along the way that are reflections of who you are. These ripples which are born from the dreams and desires you keep closest to your heart.

Dreaming is incredibly important. It is something you do for yourself, even if your dream is about another person. In pursuit of your dream, you may find a new dream and abandon the original whole sail, but that’s ok too. Your dreams will rarely stay the same as you move through life. Just like you, they are an ever-changing concept that adapts as you grow and your environment changes. I dare say it is a key component in the soup that makes us human, and without it, I don’t think there would be much reason for individuality.

So, what is your dream? Do you fight for it with tooth and nail, or do you passively hope for its achievement as you go about your daily life? Whatever your answer, I hope you understand that your dream is the reason you are the way you are. Your dream brings meaning to your life that not many other things can bring you. A reason to be. A reason to live. A reason to keep on dreaming.

Dreams Fade

A Dreamer dreams

By night or by day

And none can know

The day he wakes

But when he does

Escape from mind

He can’t return

To what’s left behind.

For the dream is dead

An old perception

When the dreamer wakes

With no exception

The Real Monsters of the Odyssey, and What They Might Have Actually Been

I finally saw The Odyssey this week, and honestly, the monsters are what stuck with me most. Not because they’re scary, exactly, but because a few of them kept nagging at me afterward. Homer didn’t just pull these things out of thin air. Some of them, it turns out, might trace back to actual places,…

Forest Fairies: Why So Many Cultures Believe Something Magical Lives in the Woods

Cultures with no contact with each other, separated by oceans and thousands of years, kept arriving at the same basic idea. Something small, something magical, lives in the forest. It watches. It has rules. Break them, and you’ll regret it. That pattern shows up almost everywhere humans have ever lived near trees, which raises a…
