Hákarl, Iceland

Have you ever had shark before? Probably not, right. Well, that should change if you ever get the chance to visit Iceland. Hákarl is an Icelandic delicacy made from fermented Greenland shark. Known for its pungent smell and strong taste, this dish has a strong ammonia-like aroma (I know — doesn’t sound too yummy though. However, that’s not the point). Despite its unique odor, the flavor profile is surprisingly milder (luckily), reminiscent of a blend of fishiness and tanginess that’s an adventure in itself.

Escamoles, Mexico

Are you feeling like challenging your inner Bear Grylls? Then Mexico is the place to be. Escamoles, also known as “insect caviar,” are ant larvae harvested from the roots of agave plants in Mexico. Considered a local gourmet masterpiece, these tiny larvae are often sautéed with butter and spices. The end result is a nutty and buttery taste with a texture reminiscent of cottage cheese. So even though this meal sounds super weird and quirky — it’s actually quite delicious.

Stargazey Pie, England

Who would ever turn down a piece of pie. Well, you maybe. After you read what this pie is all about. Stargazey Pie is a traditional Cornish dish that features fish—usually pilchards or sardines—embedded in a pie crust with their heads poking through the pastry (just when you thought it can’t get worse). It’s a unique sight as the fish appear to be gazing at the stars (hence the name). The pie is typically baked with a mix of eggs, potatoes, and other seasonings. And even though it sounds controversial, it could actually be a pretty savory and hearty dish. If you like fish, at least.

Century Egg, China

Now, this is one that we’ve all seen in James Corden’s “Spill Your Guts, Fill Your Guts”. However, you don’t have to be Demi Moore to get a chance to eat this delicacy. Also known as preserved egg or thousand-year-old egg, the Century Egg is made by preserving duck, chicken, or quail eggs in a mix of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice straw for several weeks to several months. The result? A black or translucent egg white with a creamy, greenish yolk that you wouldn’t like to use for baking. To say the least.

Casu Marzu, Italy

Casu Marzu, a traditional Sardinian cheese, takes fermentation to a whole new level with one of the quirkiest global meals. This cheese is left to ferment with live insect larvae, primarily cheese flies, which break down the cheese fats, creating a soft and creamy texture with an intense, somewhat pungent flavor. So if you ever find yourself in Italy, and get bored with eating pizza, pasta, and lasagna — why not spice things up for a bit? Or should I say — bug things up.
