So, what makes the Myrtles Plantation one of the most haunted places in America?
Brief History
The Myrtles Plantation was built in 1796 by General David Bradford. In 1820, he sold The Myrtles to his son-in-law, Clark Woodruff. After 14 years, the house was sold to Ruffin Stirling who was responsible for making the mansion look grand and elegant.
When Ruffin Stirling died in 1854, Mary, his wife, started managing the plantation. In 1865, Mary gave the house to her daughter, Sarah, who was married to William Winter.
Today, the Myrtles Plantation is owned by John and Teeta Moss. The mansion is open for overnight guests and ghost tours for anyone who loves a good opportunity to check out the paranormal.
Reasons the Myrtles Plantation is one of the Most Haunted Places in America
The Mirror with Spirits
One of the most haunted objects found in the Myrtles Plantation is a mirror. According to the tour guides, several guests of the establishment have reported seeing faces, claw marks, and fingerprints in the mirror. The tour guide states that the face people are seeing as well as the claw marks likely belong to Sarah who was said to have been accidentally murdered by one of her slaves.
According to one story, Sarah and her two daughters were killed by one of their slaves who poisoned them with the attempt to make them healthy again. Unfortunately, her plan didn’t work as intended, and she accidentally killed them. Afterward, all the mirrors in the house were covered so that their spirits would not be trapped. However, the servants forgot to cover one mirror, trapping Sarah and her two daughters in the mansion.
The Ghost of Chloe
One of the reasons the Myrtles Plantation is one of the most haunted places in America is because of Chloe’s ghost. According to a story, Chloe was the slave who killed Sarah and her daughters. When Chloe asked the other slaves to help her escape, they were afraid of the wrath they would receive because of her actions. As such, they decided to hang her on a tree.
Chloe’s ghost was described as a woman wearing a green turban. In one of the negatives sent to the National Geographic Explorer, the filming crew determined that one of the photos has an apparition of a slave girl. From there, the National Geographic Explorer used the image in their documentary of the mansion.
Today, many experts believe that Chloe didn’t exist. Even so, many people who entered the Myrtles Plantation reported seeing and experiencing several paranormal activities.
Other Hauntings
Reports of strange occurrences in the Myrtles Plantation can be dated back to the 1950s. Aside from seeing the ghost of a woman wearing a green turban, people have also heard footsteps on the stairs, children’s cries, and the piano playing by itself. Plus, the lights in the house keep turning on and off.
All in all, these documented strange occurrences are the reasons Myrtles Plantation is the most haunted place in America.
