Books are supposed to preserve knowledge, but what happens when that knowledge is considered too dangerous? The Gospel of Eve

The early days of Christianity were chaotic. Dozens of different texts and beliefs circulated before the Church established an “official” version of the religion. One of those texts was The Gospel of Eve, which we only know about because early Church leaders condemned it.

The Sibylline Books

The Sibylline Books were a collection of prophecies kept in Ancient Rome. They were so important that they were locked away in the Temple of Jupiter and only consulted in times of crisis.

Then, in 83 BC, a mysterious fire burned the temple—and the books—into ash. Rome tried to recreate them by collecting similar prophecies from around the region, but in 405 AD, Emperor Honorius ordered them to be burned for good.

Why? Some believe the books contained predictions too dangerous for the ruling class. Did they warn of Rome’s fall? Foresee the rise of new religions? Who knows.

The Book of the Wars of the Lord

The Book of Thoth

The Book of Thoth is one of the most famous books that disappeared from history, said to have been written by the Egyptian god of wisdom and magic.
