Can Humans Live on Mars? What Would It Take to Survive on the Red Planet?

Mars has fascinated us for centuries, but now it’s more than just an object of curiosity—it’s a serious candidate for humanity’s next home. With NASA, SpaceX, and other organizations working toward crewed missions, the idea of people living on Mars is no longer just science fiction. So, now we have to ask can humans live on Mars? Is this actually possible?

But wanting to live there and actually surviving are two very different things. Mars is a harsh, unforgiving place. The air is unbreathable, the temperatures are brutal, and the radiation is lethal. There’s no liquid water, no food, and no protection from the elements. It’s a planet that actively tries to kill you at every turn. However, people like Elon Musk still claim that it could be our second home. So, let’s explore how realistic that could really be.

The Reality of Life on Mars

At first glance, Mars doesn’t seem that different from Earth. It has mountains, valleys, ice caps, and even seasons. But the similarities end there. The atmosphere is 100 times thinner than Earth’s and made almost entirely of carbon dioxide. If you stepped outside without a spacesuit, you wouldn’t just suffocate—you’d also be boiled alive and frozen at the same time. That’s because the low pressure causes bodily fluids to vaporize, while the extreme cold—often dropping to -100°F at night—would finish you off in seconds.

And then there’s the radiation. Without a magnetic field like Earth’s, Mars is constantly bombarded by cosmic rays and solar radiation. A single year on Mars would expose you to levels of radiation that significantly increase cancer risks. Over decades, it could cause severe damage to the body, including neurological problems.

Even something as simple as dust is a hazard. Mars is covered in a fine, toxic dust laced with perchlorates—chemicals that interfere with human thyroid function. This dust gets into everything, clinging to spacesuits, machinery, and even air filters. Long-term exposure could lead to serious respiratory issues. Needless to say, surviving living on Mars wouldn’t just be difficult. It would be a never-ending battle against an environment designed to wipe you out.

How Would We Breathe, Drink, and Eat?

Since Mars’ atmosphere is basically poison, settlers would need a constant supply of oxygen. One option is bringing tanks of it from Earth, but that’s not sustainable for a long-term colony. A better solution is extracting oxygen from Mars itself. NASA’s MOXIE experiment, currently being tested on the Perseverance rover, has already shown that it’s possible to convert carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. Scaling that up would be essential for a human settlement.

Water is another major challenge. Mars does have ice, but it’s either buried underground or locked away in polar caps. Extracting it would require advanced mining and filtration systems. Another option is pulling moisture directly from the air, though Mars’ dry climate makes that difficult.

As for food, growing crops on Mars won’t be as easy as planting a few seeds and waiting. The soil is toxic, the temperatures are freezing, and there’s no rain. The most viable solution is hydroponic farming, where plants grow in nutrient-rich water instead of soil. Underground greenhouses with artificial lighting and climate control could allow crops like potatoes and leafy greens to grow. But large-scale food production would take years to perfect, meaning settlers would still rely on food shipments from Earth for a long time.

Where Would We Live?

Building a livable home on Mars is another challenge. The surface is dangerous, with radiation levels too high for long-term exposure. That means settlers would need underground shelters, possibly inside lava tubes—natural caves formed by ancient volcanic activity. These caves already exist on Mars and could offer protection from radiation and temperature extremes.

Another idea is 3D-printing habitats using Martian soil. NASA has already experimented with this technology, creating structures layer by layer using local materials. This would eliminate the need to transport heavy building materials from Earth, making colonization much more feasible.

There’s also the concept of ice domes, where transparent inflatable habitats are covered in thick layers of ice. Since water is an excellent radiation shield, these ice-covered domes could provide protection while also serving as a water reserve. Whatever the solution, one thing is clear—Mars settlers won’t be building white picket fences anytime soon. Their “homes” will be more like sealed bunkers designed to keep the hostile environment out.

Can Mars Ever Be Truly Habitable?

After learning all of this, you’re probably wondering “Can Mars ever be truly habitable?”. Well, according to some scientists, the answer is yes. However, they believe we shouldn’t just settle on Mars—we should transform it. The idea, known as terraforming, involves warming the planet, thickening its atmosphere, and introducing plants that could eventually produce oxygen.

There are a few proposed ways to do this. One idea is to release greenhouse gases like CO₂ and methane to trap heat, similar to what happens with climate change on Earth. Another concept involves nuclear explosions at the poles to melt ice and release more CO₂. Some have even suggested placing giant mirrors in space to reflect sunlight and heat up the planet.

In theory, if we could raise the temperature and pressure enough, Mars could start to support liquid water again. Over centuries—or even millennia—it might become a place where humans could walk outside without a spacesuit. But that’s an incredibly long-term goal, and many scientists doubt whether it’s even possible.

For the foreseeable future, any humans on Mars will be living in sealed habitats, completely dependent on technology to stay alive. And even the success of this is highly questionable.
