5 Important Questions To Ask Your Car Accident Lawyer

About 44,680 estimated preventable traffic fatalities occurred in the United States during 2024, according to early findings from the National Safety Council. According to Sacramento car accident lawyer Glenn Guenard, if you’ve been in a car accident and want to settle, you need to find out the extent of your injuries and how much they will cost you in the future, in case you lose the ability to work anymore. This is why it’s important to find the right lawyer. Car accident lawyers differ, though, so asking the right questions at the start can help you find a good one who will fight for you and understands your needs.

Here are five important questions you should ask:

What Is Your Experience With Car Accident Cases?

For the Suisman Shapiro law firm, experience matters. It’s not just about how long a lawyer has been practicing law.

Before hiring a lawyer, don’t just ask them if they handled cases of car accidents. Find out how many, how well, and how recently they have done it. Ask them about the type of car accident, whether it was a rear-end collision or a hit-and-run.

Since every case is singular in its way, it would be helpful to investigate your lawyer’s background. Ask if they had experience with the local laws or insurance companies.

The fields of practice concerning your attorney might affect the progression of your case, so be very careful in choosing the one who can represent you well. Discussing that level of experience with your attorney at the consultation might be the catalyst to the outcome of your case.

How Do You Approach Client Communication?

Communication with a car accident lawyer will be vital, so you must understand how they operate.

How often can they update you about the progress in your case? You want a lawyer who informs you and can simplify legal terms for your better understanding.

Inquire if they prefer communication by phone, email, or face-to-face, and how long processes like these take on their side of matters.

It is also essential to know whether they entertain your questions or concerns and are justly available to you.

A suitable communication strategy makes you feel supported through this journey and builds trust. Knowing how they communicate will help you determine whether it works for you and makes you comfortable.

What Are Your Fees and Payment Structure?

An attorney could charge a fixed fee, an hourly rate, or, on a contingency basis, where they could only get paid if you win the case.

Ask about upfront costs or retainers you may have to pay, as clarifying these points will save you from being surprised later.

Clarify the fees covering court-related expenses or expenses for expert witnesses and whether or not the lawyer will cover them or will be billing you separately.

Ask when payments are due and in what manner they should be paid. Having this clarified will guide your budgeting and make sure you feel comfortable with the payment plan in question.

What Is the Likely Timeline for My Case?

When should you anticipate the case’s conclusion? The lawyer must give you a realistic time frame for the situation at hand. Usually, it takes a couple of months or years to settle cases.

Time could be affected by things like more complex cases, the extent of injuries, or whether liability is disputed.

A lawyer can provide you with the major milestones, such as evidence collection, claims, and possible court dates.

Stay informed and ask for updates regularly. Although you may desire a quick conclusion to the case, a speedy resolution is not the best option. It pays to be patient when it comes to these types of legal matters but within the range of your limitations.

How Do You Handle Negotiations and Settlement Offers?

What will their approach to negotiations and settlement proposals be? You should understand this strategy. An attorney will first determine the worth of your case, including factors such as medical bills and wage loss, including the emotional and physical suffering you’ve incurred.

They will collect the necessary evidence to prove your claims and make way for vigorous negotiations.

Subsequently, your attorney will start negotiations with the insurance company or the opposing party. Their main goal will be to get a just settlement in your best interest.

Find out what steps they take when they receive low offers. A competent lawyer will not allow you to be shortchanged; they should be open to a counteroffer and willing to go to trial.

Communication is vital, and you need to be secure about strategies to negotiate. Once you have nailed all these points to the letter, you can be more equipped to find the best lawyer who can best represent you in case you suffer from a traffic accident, making sure that you can receive a just compensation on your road to recovery.
