How the Ancient Persians Invented Air Conditioning
Every summer, as soon as the heat waves roll in and the hum of AC units fills the air, it’s easy to forget that staying cool is a pretty modern luxury. But long before electricity, the ancient Persians had already figured out how to beat the desert heat. Over 2,000 years ago, they built cities in places where summer temperatures regularly soared above 100°F. Yet, their homes, palaces, and even storage chambers stayed cool and livable. Their secret? A brilliant piece of ancient engineering called the badgir, or “wind catcher.”
The Original Air Conditioner
At first glance, a badgir doesn’t look like much. It’s just a tall, elegant tower rising from the roof of a building, kind of like an oversized chimney. But instead of letting hot air escape, it caught cool air. Literally.
Here’s how it worked: these towers were built facing the prevailing winds. When air flowed into one side of the tower, it was funneled down into the building below. Inside, the air often passed over water, sometimes from an underground canal called a qanat. This cooled it even further through evaporation. The result? A steady stream of naturally cooled air circulating through the house.
If the wind wasn’t blowing, the system still worked in reverse. Warm air inside the building rose and escaped through the tower. This process pulled cooler air in from lower openings. It was passive, sustainable, and completely silent — basically nature’s air conditioner, running on physics instead of power.

Life in the Desert, Engineered by Genius
This wasn’t some niche trick used by the wealthy. Entire Persian cities — like Yazd, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth — were designed around the principles of natural cooling. Streets were built narrow and shaded to minimize sun exposure. Walls were made thick from mud-brick for insulation. Additionally, underground cisterns called ab anbars stored cool water all year round.
Step into one of those cisterns even today, and you’ll feel it — a sudden drop in temperature. Some of these systems were so efficient that ice could be stored (and even made) in the middle of the desert. Seriously — Persians used yakhchals, dome-shaped “ice houses,” that used similar airflow and insulation methods. This preserved frozen water well into summer. We’re talking refrigeration… in 400 BCE.
Cooling Before Carbon
What’s wild is that the ancient Persian system worked better in some ways than modern air conditioning. It didn’t emit a single ounce of carbon or use an ounce of electricity. It was sustainable by necessity, long before “sustainability” became a buzzword.
Persians didn’t fight their environment. Instead, they worked with it. They studied the way air flowed, how heat rose, and how shade and water could manipulate temperature. They built entire cities that breathed naturally. The combination of badgirs, qanats, and thick earthen architecture created microclimates. These ensured life could thrive even under brutal desert suns.
And while the concept spread across the Middle East and North Africa, you’ll see wind towers in Egypt, the UAE, and even old parts of Pakistan. However, it was in ancient Persia that this truly began.
