How to Save Money When Moving Your Belongings Long Distances

Moving long distances can be stressful and costly, but with some strategic planning you can significantly reduce the financial burden. Whether you’re relocating for a new job, family reasons, or simply a change of scenery, here are several practical tips to help you save money when moving during your long-distance move.

Declutter Before You Move

One of the best ways to save money on your move is by reducing the number of belongings you need to transport. Start by decluttering your home and parting ways with items you no longer need or use. Consider holding a garage sale, selling valuable items online, or donating unwanted goods to charity. By moving fewer items, you’ll reduce the size of your shipment, leading to lower moving costs.

Compare Moving Companies and Get Multiple Quotes

Choosing the right moving company can make a huge difference in your moving expenses. Do not go with the first quote you get. Instead, obtain quotes from at least three to five reputable moving companies using shiply.com.

Make sure to ask for a breakdown of the costs, so you know exactly what you’re paying for and can spot any hidden fees. Some companies may offer lower rates during off-peak seasons or mid-week moves, so keep those options in mind.

It’s important to decide if you need to hire a company like this full service moving company Suddath or if you would rather move yourself DIY style. DIY isn’t for everyone. If you have quite a bit of furniture you’ve accumulated, you should likely consider the full-service movers.

Consider DIY Moving Options

Hiring a full-service moving company may be convenient, but it’s often the most expensive option. If you’re looking to save money, consider alternatives like renting a moving truck and doing the packing and loading yourself. You can rent trucks from companies like U-Haul, Budget, or Penske, and they typically charge based on mileage and the number of days you’ll need the truck. If you’re moving long distances but have a limited budget, DIY moves are a cost-effective alternative.

Another DIY option is renting a moving container from companies like PODS or U-Pack. These containers are delivered to your home, and you can load them at your own pace. The company will then transport the container to your new location. This option is usually cheaper than a full-service move, but it also provides more flexibility.

Pack Efficiently and Use Free or Cheap Packing Supplies

Packing materials can be surprisingly expensive, especially for a long-distance move. Save money by sourcing free or inexpensive packing supplies. Local grocery stores, liquor stores, and big-box retailers often have free boxes that they’re willing to give away. You can also check online marketplaces like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for people giving away used moving boxes.

When it comes to packing, maximize space by using items you already have, such as suitcases, laundry baskets, and dresser drawers, to transport your belongings. Use towels, blankets, and clothing as padding for fragile items, which will cut down on the need for bubble wrap and packing paper.

Plan Your Move During the Off-Peak Season

If possible, schedule your move during off-peak moving times. The summer months (May to September) are the busiest for movers, which often leads to higher prices. Opting for a move in the fall or winter (or even during the middle of the month or week) can lead to significant savings. Movers are more likely to offer discounts or better rates during slower periods when demand is lower.
