The Blue Octopus the Size of a Golf Ball Just Found 6,000 Feet Beneath the Galápagos
“He’s tiny! It’s blue!” That’s what a scientist yelled out loud, live on the research ship. A robotic camera had just caught a flash of color on the seafloor near the Galápagos. Nearly 5,800 feet down, in total darkness, something small and impossibly blue was just sitting there. Another crew member had a simpler comparison. It looked, they said, like one of those plushies. It wasn’t a toy. Instead, it was a brand-new species of octopus, and it took scientists more than ten years to actually prove it.
Found in 2015, Confirmed in 2026
The moment happened back in 2015, aboard the research vessel E/V Nautilus. It was a joint expedition with the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galápagos National Park Directorate. Their remotely operated vehicle was combing the ocean floor near Darwin Island when the little blue creature drifted into frame. It was about the size of a golf ball. Small enough to curl up in your palm, with room to spare.
The team collected it. Its body eventually made its way, preserved, in the mail, to Janet Voight, an octopus expert at Chicago‘s Field Museum. “When it arrived, I was like, oh my goodness,” she said. Before that, all she’d had to work with were photos. The moment the real thing showed up, she knew right away it was something genuinely different. This year, more than a decade after that first sighting, her team finally confirmed it. A species entirely new to science, now officially named Microeledone galapagensis.

How You Study an Octopus Without Cutting It Open
Here’s the part that impressed me most. Researchers only had one physical specimen to work with, and they didn’t want to dissect it. So instead, the Field Museum’s team ran it through a CT scanner, the same kind of imaging technology used on human patients. They built a full 3D model of its insides without ever making a single cut.
Stephanie Smith runs the museum’s X-ray lab, and she put it simply. There’s nothing quite like spending a whole day looking at something no other human being has ever seen. That’s a genuinely rare sentence for anyone to get to say out loud at work.
A Family of Giants With One Tiny Exception
The real surprise came once researchers figured out where this little octopus actually belongs on the family tree. It’s part of a group called Megaleledonidae. Every other known member of that family is considerably larger and lives way down near Antarctica, in the frigid waters of the Southern Ocean. This Galápagos octopus is, by comparison, something like the family’s runt: tiny, tropical, and living thousands of miles from all its known relatives.
It gets stranger. The closest genetic match isn’t in Antarctica at all. A related species lives near New Caledonia, way out in the South Pacific, thousands of miles from the Galápagos in the opposite direction. Whatever shared ancestor connects the two of them almost certainly lived somewhere in between, though exactly where and how remains a genuinely open question.
