The Truth About “Mad Honey” — The Hallucinogenic Nectar That Can Kill You
At first glance, it looks innocent — a jar of dark, ruby-red honey. But locals in Turkey call it deli bal, or “mad honey.” It’s been used for centuries as medicine, as an aphrodisiac, and, occasionally, as a weapon. But here’s the catch: eat just a little too much, and this sweet treat can make your heart stop. Literally.
A Honey with a Warning Label
Most honey comes from bees that collect nectar from wildflowers or clover. But mad honey comes from bees that feed on rhododendrons — beautiful mountain shrubs with vibrant pink flowers that hide a nasty secret: grayanotoxins. When bees gather nectar from rhododendron blossoms, they carry those toxins home, mix them into their honeycombs, and create what might be nature’s most deceptive food.
In tiny doses, mad honey causes a light-headed, floaty kind of high — a sense of warmth, relaxation, maybe even mild euphoria. In larger doses, it’s a full-on trip: hallucinations, dizziness, sweating, nausea, blurred vision. And if you’re really unlucky, your heart slows down so much that it can drop you into cardiac arrest. There’s a reason the locals who still harvest it in the Black Sea region of Turkey treat it like a drug, not a dessert.
The Ancient Buzz
Mad honey isn’t some recent TikTok curiosity — it’s ancient. The earliest records go back more than 2,000 years, when armies used it as chemical warfare.
In 67 BCE, Roman soldiers marching through what’s now northern Turkey were ambushed by the local Heptakometes tribe. The tribe had left pots of mad honey along the path — sweet, tempting, and deadly. The Romans, exhausted and hungry, ate it. Within hours, they were vomiting, delirious, and collapsing one after another. When the tribe attacked, the Romans could barely stand. It was one of the few times in history an entire army was taken down by honey.

Even later, mad honey became a prized medicine in parts of Asia and the Middle East.
