The Will-o’-the-Wisp: The Ghostly Light That Has Lured Travelers to Their Deaths Across Every Culture
Late at night, somewhere in a marsh or bog, a flickering light appears. It is the right height to be a lantern. It moves in a way that suggests purpose. You follow it. The path you were on disappears behind you. The light keeps moving. Eventually you realize the ground beneath your feet is not solid, and the light has gone. This experience, or something close enough to it to produce an identical story, has been reported across virtually every culture on Earth that has marshland. The names are different. The explanation is different. The light is the same.
What the Names Tell You
In England, it is called will-o’-the-wisp, jack-o’-lantern, friar’s lantern, and hinkypunk. The name wisp originally referred to a bundle of sticks used as a torch, so will-o’-the-wisp means roughly “Will” of the torch. The Welsh called it corpse candles. In Latin tradition it is ignis fatuus, foolish fire. In Louisiana, Cajun folklore calls it the fifollet, a soul sent back from the dead to do penance who instead attacks travelers for vengeance. Then, in Argentina and Uruguay, it is luz mala, evil light. In Japan the phenomenon is called hitodama, a human soul appearing as a floating blue or white fireball. In China, it appears in folklore as ghost fire, typically the souls of those who died violently. Even in Germany, it is irrlichter, errant lights. In India, the Kollivay Pey of Tamil Nadu tradition describes a spirit holding a flickering torch.
The consistent elements across all of these: the light appears near ground level over wet, low-lying, or marshy terrain. It moves. It seems to have intent. Then, it leads travelers away from safe paths. It is associated with death, either the deaths of those who followed it or the spirits of those already dead.
The Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, writing in 1340, provided one of the earliest literary descriptions. He called them corpse candles and described them appearing in every hollow, which suggests the phenomenon was familiar and consistent enough to need no further explanation to his readers.
The English Origin Story
English folklore gave the will-o’-the-wisp a biography. A blacksmith named Will, too clever and too wicked, died and faced Saint Peter at the gates of heaven. Peter sent him back for a second chance. Will continued to cause harm. As a result, heaven rejected him permanently and hell would not take him. The Devil, grudgingly, gave him a burning coal to light his way, and condemned Will to wander the marshes and bogs forever, tricking travelers into following his light to their deaths.
The story is elegant because it explains the malice. The light is not random natural phenomenon but a specific entity with a grudge, condemned to eternity without rest and taking travelers with it out of spite. The moral structure is also clear: a man who lived badly enough to be rejected by both heaven and hell becomes the thing that kills you if you follow a light you should not follow.
Variations of this story, with the specifics adjusted for local theology and geography, appear across European and Asian traditions. The particulars differ. The shape of the story does not.

What Science Says
The scientific explanation that has accumulated most support involves the chemistry of decomposition in waterlogged environments.
When organic matter, plant material, animal remains, decomposes underwater or in wet anaerobic conditions, it produces methane and phosphine gas. Phosphine, specifically diphosphane, can ignite spontaneously on contact with oxygen at low temperatures. In swampy conditions, pockets of these gases escape from the ground, and the spontaneous ignition produces brief flickering flames of greenish-blue light, hovering close to the surface. The burning phosphine also produces white mist, which amplifies the apparent size of the flame and can make it look considerably larger and more ghost-like than the actual flame warrants.
Crucially, phosphine flames move when approached. The disturbance of air from a walking person pushes the gas pocket ahead, so the flame appears to retreat. The more you follow it, the further it stays ahead of you. This perfectly reproduces the folkloric behavior of a will-o’-the-wisp, retreating when followed, staying just out of reach.
Additionally, bioluminescence from fungi or algae in marshy areas offers a second explanation for some sightings, particularly those described as a steady glow rather than a flickering flame. Both mechanisms may produce what observers describe as will-o’-the-wisps, in different conditions.
