Best 8 Things to Do in Rwanda

Rwanda

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is one of Africa’s most exciting destinations for outdoor adventures. Its diverse landscapes—ranging from volcanic mountains and dense rainforests to savannah plains and sparkling lakes offer endless opportunities for exploration. Travelers who enjoy nature, wildlife, hiking, and cultural encounters will find Rwanda a perfect destination for adventure.

From trekking endangered gorillas to hiking volcanic peaks and exploring scenic lakes, outdoor adventures in Rwanda provide unforgettable experiences for both thrill-seekers and nature lovers.

Gorilla trekking in the Virunga Mountains

One of the most famous outdoor experiences in Rwanda is gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park. Located in the northern part of the country, Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is home to the endangered mountain gorillas that live in the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains.

Visitors hike through bamboo forests and misty mountain trails with experienced guides in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once located, trekkers are allowed to spend one hour observing the gorillas as they feed, play, and interact with each other.

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure allows visitors to see one of the world’s rarest animals up close while supporting conservation efforts that protect these magnificent primates.

Chimpanzee trekking in the rainforest

For primate lovers, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park is another thrilling outdoor activity. Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. On the day of the encounter, the trekkers wake up early and follow expert guides deep into the forest to track groups of wild chimpanzees. The experience can be challenging because chimpanzees move quickly through the trees, but hearing their loud calls echo through the forest and watching them swing through branches is unforgettable.

Also, Nyungwe is home to several other primate species, including colobus monkeys, making it one of the best places in Africa for primate tracking.

Hiking and volcano climbing

Rwanda’s mountainous terrain makes it an excellent destination for hiking and mountain climbing. The Virunga Mountains offer several exciting hiking routes for adventurers. Among the popular hikes is climbing Mount Bisoke, a dormant volcano famous for its stunning crater lake at the summit. The hike is moderately challenging and usually takes a full day to complete.

For more experienced climbers, trekking up Mount Karisimbi is an even greater adventure. As the highest volcano in the Virunga range, it is typically climbed in two days and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

These hikes allow visitors to explore Rwanda’s dramatic volcanic scenery while enjoying the cool mountain air and lush vegetation.

Safari adventures in the savannah

For travelers interested in traditional African wildlife safaris, Akagera National Park offers an exciting outdoor adventure in eastern Rwanda. The park features open savannah, woodlands, lakes, and wetlands that support a wide range of wildlife. Visitors can explore the park through guided game drives where they may see animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes.

Boat safaris on Lake Ihema are also popular, allowing visitors to observe hippos, crocodiles, and many water birds while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest

One of the most unique outdoor adventures in Rwanda is the canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park. Suspended high above the forest floor, this metal bridge stretches across a deep valley and offers spectacular views of the rainforest canopy.

Walking along the canopy bridge gives visitors a chance to see the forest from a completely different perspective. Birds, monkeys, and butterflies can often be seen moving through the treetops, while the distant mountains create a stunning backdrop.

This activity is perfect for travelers who enjoy nature photography and scenic viewpoints.

Lake adventures and water activities

Rwanda is also home to beautiful lakes that provide relaxing outdoor activities. One of the most scenic is Lake Kivu, located along Rwanda’s western border. While at the destinations, visitors can enjoy kayaking, boat trips, swimming and cycling along the scenic shoreline.

The lake is surrounded by charming towns such as Gisenyi and Kibuye, which provide excellent bases for outdoor exploration.

Cycling the Congo Nile Trail

Another exciting adventure is cycling along the famous Congo Nile Trail. This scenic trail runs for about 227 kilometers along the shores of Lake Kivu. The route passes through beautiful landscapes, small villages, tea plantations, and rolling hills. Travelers can choose to cycle the entire trail or explore shorter sections while enjoying Rwanda’s stunning countryside.

This activity provides both adventure and cultural experiences as visitors interact with local communities along the way.

Cultural outdoor experiences

Outdoor adventures in Rwanda are not limited to wildlife and nature. Many cultural activities take place outdoors in rural communities and traditional villages. Visitors can explore the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where they learn about traditional Rwandan lifestyles, dances, and crafts. Cultural walks, village visits, and agricultural tours provide insight into the daily lives of local communities.

These experiences allow travelers to connect with Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage while enjoying its beautiful landscapes

Conclusion

Rwanda is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of adventures in its forests, mountains, lakes, and savannah landscapes. Whether trekking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, exploring the rainforest in Nyungwe, or enjoying a wildlife safari in Akagera, Rwanda’s national parks provide unique experiences for every traveller.

With its breathtaking scenery, rich wildlife, and welcoming communities, Rwanda continues to grow as one of Africa’s top destinations for outdoor adventure. Visitors leave with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty that makes this small country truly extraordinary.
