How to Get Around the Riviera Maya: Complete Transportation Guide

This is the key to a successful trip. The Riviera Maya is a long stretch (approx. 130 km), and choosing the right mode of transport will define your experience.

1. Public Transportation (Colectivos and Buses)

  • What it is: The most economical and authentic way to get between main towns (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum). Colectivos are white vans that constantly run along Federal Highway 307. ADO buses are larger, more comfortable, and air-conditioned, ideal for longer distances.
  • Ideal for: Budget travelers, point-to-point journeys (e.g., from Playa to Tulum), and those who want a local experience.
  • How to use it: For colectivos, simply hail them on the highway. Say “bajan” (meaning “getting off”) for them to stop. For ADO, buy tickets at the stations (located in each city).
  • Advantages: Very low price, high frequency, connects main destinations.
  • Disadvantages: They don’t reach remote destinations (cenotes, isolated hotels, reserves). Limited schedules at night.

2. Rental Car

  • What it is: Renting a vehicle for total independence.
  • Ideal for: Families, groups of friends, or those who want maximum freedom to explore hidden cenotes, secluded beaches, and set their own schedule.
  • How to use it: Book online or at the Cancun Airport. You will need a valid driver’s license, a passport, and a credit card in your name to secure the deposit.
  • Advantages: Absolute freedom, flexibility, and access to remote places.
  • Disadvantages: Additional cost (rental, gas, toll roads), stress of finding parking in cities like Playa del Carmen, and the risk of fines or damage.

3. Taxis

  • What it is: The most direct and door-to-door option.
  • Ideal for: Short trips within a city (e.g., from the hotel to a restaurant), or when traveling at night.
  • How to use it: Find them at stands or call by phone/app. Crucial: always agree on the price of the trip BEFORE getting in. They do not use meters.
  • Advantages: Comfort and immediate availability.
  • Disadvantages: It is the most expensive means. Prices can vary widely and are not practical for all-day excursions.

4. Organized Excursions and Tours (with Transportation Included)

  • What it is: The all-in-one solution. Companies like Xplora Riviera take care of everything: round-trip transport from your hotel, a professional guide, entrance fees, and sometimes meals.
  • Ideal for: Excursions to distant or complex destinations (Chichén Itzá, Sian Ka’an, Holbox), for those who don’t want to worry about logistics, and for specialized activities (diving, snorkeling).
  • How to use it: Book in advance online or through your hotel. We at Xplora Riviera offer a wide range of tours.
  • Advantages: Maximum comfort and peace of mind. Learning from expert guides. Safety and perfect planning.
  • Disadvantages: Less flexibility in schedules and pace. Higher cost than public transport.

5. Private Transfers

  • What it is: A private chauffeur service for a specific journey, such as from the airport to your hotel.
  • Ideal for: Arrivals and departures, large groups with luggage, or those seeking comfort and privacy after a long flight.
  • How to use it: By booking in advance. Xplora Riviera offers this service to start your vacation on the right foot. A good option to book private transfers in Riviera Maya is Cancun Airport Transportation.
  • Advantages: No waiting, door-to-door, safe and comfortable.
  • Disadvantages: Higher price than public transportation.

6. Water Transport (Ferries and Boats)

  • What it is: Essential for reaching the islands.
  • Ideal for: Visiting Cozumel (from Playa del Carmen) or Holbox (from Chiquilá) (If you are traveling from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen Ferry, Sacbe Transfers is an excellent transportation option).
  • How to use it: Ferries to Cozumel depart hourly from the Playa pier. For Holbox, take a colectivo or taxi to Chiquilá and then a boat.
  • Advantages: The only way to access these destinations.
  • Disadvantages: Fixed schedules and susceptible to cancellations due to bad weather.

7. Bicycle

  • What it is: A popular means of transport in small towns and islands.
  • Ideal for: Getting around Holbox, Isla Mujeres, or within hotel complexes.
  • Advantages: Eco-friendly, healthy, and perfect for short distances.
  • Disadvantages: Not viable for long distances under the Caribbean sun.

Conclusion: Independent Travel or Organized Tours?

The beauty of the Riviera Maya lies in its diversity, and so does the way to explore it. The ideal option is often a hybrid:

  • Use organized tours for the most complex and distant excursions (Chichén Itzá, Sian Ka’an, diving in Cozumel). You’ll save time, gas, and worries.
  • Use public transport or a rental car for the days you want to explore the Tulum area, its cenotes and beaches on your own, or to move between cities.
