Harnessing the Power of Positive Affirmations
Something that comes up a lot with me in my metaphysical and meditative endeavors is the idea of positive affirmations. Some people love affirmations and use them daily while others aren’t exactly fans of the idea. It’s taken a while to get used to, but I feel that when used appropriately, positive affirmations really can change your perspective on the world.
What is an affirmation?
An affirmation is a phrase that you can use in your life to help challenge your negative thoughts. When you find yourself not feeling your best or afraid to take on the world, you can use a phrase that resonates with you to help build up your mood and your confidence. In other words, a positive affirmation is a positive statement that you can use to help motivate yourself.
For instance, if you’re about to do something that you’re afraid to do, you can keep telling yourself, “This is easy for me. I am so much stronger than I realize.” The more you say it, the more you believe it, and the easier this intimidating task can become. In order for it to successfully work, in my experiences, I’ve found that I must truly and fully commit to the process and believe what I’m saying to myself.
Honestly, I didn’t fully feel the benefits of affirmations until I truly recognized and understood the importance of feeling gratitude. As I’m sure you’ve seen me say many times before, gratitude is found within the heart and soul of my meditation practice. Reflecting on what is dear to me and what brings me joy sparks this wonderful feeling from within full of energy that can fuel my meditation exercises. Part of meditation can be building energy, and the main source of fuel for my meditation is gratitude.
There will be many days when I’m not feeling up to creating that energy or where I’m just in a funk, and positive affirmations have been the key to building that gratitude up in those times. I’ll simply pick a positive affirmation, a phrase that means something to me that can build my gratitude such as, “I have so much to be grateful for” and then list what I’m grateful for. After a few minutes of focusing on this, I find that my mindset really does change to a more positive one. For me, it just takes fully immersing myself into the affirmation and coming out believing it fully in a place of gratitude.
The Science Behind Affirmations
Even some physicians have studied affirmations and visibly seen a difference that they made on patients. Studies have found that positive affirmations can alter your subconscious thoughts and improve your mood when focused on and practiced regularly. However, the catch is that these affirmations shouldn’t be generic and should mean something personal to you. The more they resonate within you, the more likely you are to connect with what you are saying and boost your mood.
How to Make Affirmations More Effective:
- Make them personal: Use words and phrases that feel authentic to you
- Keep them present tense: Say “I am” rather than “I will be”
- Include emotion: Feel the truth of what you’re saying
- Be specific: Instead of “I am successful,” try “I am successful in my career as a writer”
- Repeat consistently: Use them daily, especially during challenging times
- Combine with visualization: See yourself embodying the affirmation
If you are finding yourself in a tough time and need a little more encouragement, here are some ideas of positive affirmations that could help boost your mood and in turn, your quality of life. - Use your own language: Write them in words you naturally use
- Start with easier ones: Begin with affirmations you can somewhat believe
- Build gradually: As your confidence grows, create more ambitious statements
If nothing else, I do hope that you are able to call forth what you are grateful for as you conduct your meditation practices. We all have little things that we should be grateful for, and I think it’s important to remember them regularly, so we don’t take them for granted. I wish you all the best while you experiment with positive affirmations in your practice.
Remember, affirmations work best when combined with action. They’re not magic spells, but rather tools to help shift your mindset so you can take the steps necessary to create positive change in your life.
