Meditating During a Solar Eclipse
With the next coast-to-coast solar eclipse spanning the US not occurring until August 12, 2045, it’s more than safe to say that we just witnessed a special moment last year that won’t be back for several decades. Spiritually, as with many big astronomical moments, the solar eclipse is said to be a time of great changes, ushering in new beginnings and important life moments. Because of this, how could I not step outside onto my lawn and meditate underneath the shadows of the almost total solar eclipse? It was honestly a very interesting experience; one I couldn’t help but share with everyone.
As my time outside began, somehow the sun felt as if it was darker before the event even started. There felt as if there was a sheet of energy in front of it all day prior to the big event, a filament of energy that seemed to block the world prior to the eclipse on that day. And suddenly, the sun started to disappear, ever so slowly. My meditation under the eclipse provided me with an awareness of our place in the solar system, one that’s harder to grasp onto normally. I felt connected to the constant dance or flow of the universe. The earth moving around the sun, the moon around the earth, the full solar system moving in a dance with the greater known universe as we take our place in this cosmic ballet. I gained a special and energetic awareness of all that exists in a beautifully fluid dance around us, something that I have felt very disconnected from until this eclipse restored this awareness in me. It’s such a refreshing feeling to welcome the twisting and moving energies of the world around us and to feel their sway as we move into their dance.
I used the time of the eclipse to shed the negativities I’d been holding onto and heal. I used it as a time to see the future I wanted, to feel it, experience it, and therefore, manifest it into being. It was a time of great personal healing, a time of great energy, and a time of great purpose. I saw the clarity in what I wanted moving forward, and I visualized it coming to be.
And how quickly the sun came back shining in full force with all its energy after the height of the eclipse had passed. It was as if I hadn’t noticed the shadow cast around me until the veil was lifted and a bright, shining energy came forth to usher in my new beginnings. It was also noted that as soon as the height of the eclipse had come to pass and the sun shone back in, clouds appeared and covered the sky, clouds that had been absent all day. It was as if the universe allowed us to have this amplified experience fully free and clear, and then the clouds and weather came back as normal after the event. We were gifted this time, and it was fully clear and freeing. That didn’t go unnoticed either.

I felt the full experience, the release of what was, the embracing of this natural phenomenon allowing me to experience the moving and changing energies of the world, all ending with the returning energy and life, except one that allowed me to feel different than before. And I was reminded of the connection I felt to our world during deeper meditative experiences. It all comes back to the meditation journey I’ve been experiencing in my practice. I find it always does!
If you feel you missed out, have no fear! The solar eclipse is said to amplify the new moon energy. You can still try this meditation bringing in new beginnings each month at the time of the new moon. Each new moon, if nothing more than a cyclical representation of our lives, it’s a great time to reflect and drop that which is no longer serving us and to visualize what we want to bring into our lives. I also can’t recommend meditation on cosmic events enough. This whole experience reminded me of my place in this great expansive universe. And despite being such a small part, it was a great reminder that I have my place in the world, regardless.
